UK National Clearance Hub: new single entry point for goods

HMRC has launched the National Clearance Hub as a unified clearance gateway for goods entering, leaving, or transiting the UK. This centralizes customs processing and replaces fragmented clearance procedures. Shippers moving goods into, out of, or through the UK must now route declarations through this hub to complete customs formalities efficiently.

UK launches National Clearance Hub for unified customs clearance

On 21 May 2026, HMRC introduced the National Clearance Hub, a single entry point for clearing goods that are entering, leaving, or transiting the United Kingdom. This new system consolidates customs formalities under one portal, streamlining the process for importers, exporters, and transit operators.

Who is affected

All shippers moving goods into or out of the UK—whether for final import, export, or transit—must now use the National Clearance Hub to complete customs clearance. This applies to e-commerce merchants importing consumer goods, freight forwarders coordinating shipments, and SMB exporters clearing goods for third-country destinations.

How it works

The hub acts as the central clearance authority for UK customs procedures. Rather than submitting declarations to multiple regional or port-specific authorities, traders now submit all clearance documentation through the National Clearance Hub. This unified approach aims to reduce delays, lower administrative overhead, and provide traders with a single point of contact for goods in transit through or across UK borders.

Scope

The hub covers goods entering the UK from any third country, UK exports to third countries, and goods in transit through the UK to other destinations. It applies to all commodity types unless specific exemptions or relief programs apply (e.g., free trade agreement preferential treatment or de-minimis thresholds).

Implementation

Traders should register with the National Clearance Hub and submit all customs declarations via the platform. HMRC has provided guidance on the portal, including eligibility, document requirements, and timelines for clearance decisions.

What this means for shippers

Register with the National Clearance Hub immediately if you move goods into, out of, or through the UK. All future customs clearance must route through this single portal—failure to use it will delay shipments and trigger HMRC penalties. Audit your current clearance workflows and update them to reflect the new hub-only requirement. Check /landed-cost to confirm duty and VAT liability for your goods under the new unified system.
