US imposes antidumping duties on monosodium glutamate from China, Indonesia

The US International Trade Commission has determined that monosodium glutamate (MSG) imported from China and Indonesia is being sold at less than fair value, triggering antidumping duty orders. These duties apply to HS code 2104.20 (seasoning and condiment mixtures) and will increase the landed cost for importers sourcing MSG from these countries. Affected shippers must immediately review supplier sourcing and recalculate duty exposure for existing and future shipments.

# US Antidumping Duties on Monosodium Glutamate from China and Indonesia

On May 5, 2026, the US Department of Commerce issued a final antidumping duty determination on monosodium glutamate (MSG) originating from China and Indonesia, following an affirmative finding by the US International Trade Commission. The orders impose additional duties on top of baseline tariffs for all imports of MSG from these two countries.

Products and HS Classification Affected

The antidumping order applies to monosodium glutamate, classified under HS Chapter 21, specifically covering food seasonings and condiment mixtures. Importers sourcing MSG directly or as an ingredient in finished food products must verify the country of origin and apply the appropriate antidumping rate at entry.

China and Indonesia Affected

The determination covers MSG from both China and Indonesia. Importers currently sourcing from these countries face immediate cost increases. The final duty rates will be published separately in a subsequent Federal Register notice and apply to all entries, whether direct purchases of pure MSG or component purchases in finished goods.

What This Means for Shippers

If you import monosodium glutamate or food products containing MSG from China or Indonesia, you must immediately obtain the final antidumping rates from US Customs and Border Protection, verify the country of origin on all supplier documentation, and recalculate landed cost. Update your pricing models and notify customers of the duty increase before placing new orders. Failure to account for these duties will create a cost shock at entry and potential cash-flow surprises. Check the duty rates and recalculate your landed cost now.
